I think I actually know the answer. The painter has a fear of being unnoticed. His fear is a fear of dying nameless. Notice that he switched the position of sled with the "red" mark coming out of it. Now it is in the middle. This to me indicates that he wants people to focus on the middle sled, which has the red mark on it. The red mark could very well be the artist who got run over by one of the sleds, and no one is paying any heed to it. The artist has replicated everything else in the painting (including the horse on the bottom looking away), why would he all of a sudden change one of the locations of the horses on the sled? Because he wants to be NOTICED.
