If the betting were a conversation it would be something like this:
Preflop
Villian: I have some cards
Godfather80: I don't have a premium hand... like you're even listening to me anyway.
Flop
Villian: I don't have much
Godfather80: I have a hand
Villian: I said I didn't have *much*... I do have something
Turn
Villian: I'm still not feeling great about my hand, or I'm trapping, I wanna see what you're gonna do.
Godfather80: My hand is good.
Villian: I probably wasn't trapping... but I do want to see another card
River
Villian says, one of:
a) I had 5/3 and my draw got there
b) I had A3 or A5 and got there
c) I had a small pair and want to see a cheap showdown
Obviously in cases a and b he's calling or re-raising, so you don't want to raise here. In case c he probably won't call a worthwhile raise anyway.
