Please correct me if I am wrong about this, but players don't technically have to show both cards at showdown. If player A shows one card and player B mucks (because he cannot beat one pair or whatever), then A gets the pot because B mucked first.
I sometimes have the same problem at my home game. If anyone is in the hand at showdown with me, I ask to see both cards before showing mine (or accepting that they won the hand if I bet last).
I also tell some novices to show both cards, just in case they misread their hand and lose because they are donks (but not saying 'donks').
