Default Re: Give me examples of indy/punk/metal subgenres

I'm not into the metal-core nor too much of the punk (some of it though).

But the thread seems to be about any genres in the indie-alternative realm.

On the Rhapsody music service I've learned a lot more about these kind of sub-genres and their names than I ever would have otherwise.

I'll give some examples of how they're organized on Rhapsody.

FWIW - if you're really interested in this you can download the program for free and browse through what bands are in what genres without having to pay to subscribe to the service.

Many bands are listed in more than one category.
ColdPlay is in Brit Pop, Brit Rock and Adult Alternative for example.

Under sub-genres for Alternative/Punk:
Alt Country - Wilco
Alt Dance - Gorillaz, Royksopp, Kraftwerk
Alt Metal - Nickelback, Linkin Park, Incubus
Brit Pop - Coldplay, U2, Snow Patrol, Killers, Oasis
Dream Pop
Electropop
Experimental
Goth
Grunge
Indie Rock
Industrial
New Wave
Post-Punk
Power Pop
Punk
Punk-Funk
Retro/Vintage
Ska Revival

Under Indie Rock there are the subgenres:
Baroque Pop
Emo
Homemade
Indie Pop
Lo-Fi
New Zealand Pop
Post-Modern Pop

The top Indie Pop bans include Death Cab for Cutie, Belle and Sebastian, Dr. Dog, Hot Chip, The Hush Sound, Camera Obscura.

Under Dream Pop are subgenres for Shoegazer, Slowcore and Space Rock. Dream Pop bands include Air, Mazzy Star, Sigur Ros, The Verve.

Under Punk are the subgenres:
Cowpunk
Hardcore Punk
Metalcore
Oi-Streeet Punk
Old-School Punk
Pre-punk
Punk-Pop
Riot Grrl
Ska Punk
Skate Punk
Straight-Edge

etc etc etc.

Lots of time to be killed surfing around and browsing the different genres and the linked bands and artists.
It's led me to a few bands I had never heard of who I ended up liking a lot.
