Easier to answer if you give some examples of bands you lump in with hardcore.

I am not as prone to care as most metal dudes about stuff like this but I think there is a line between the two genres. Mostly around lyrical content and vocal style for me.

My favorite music is that which combines the riffage of metal with the innovative drumming and rhythms of hardcore. Too much metal features crappy drumming.
