Sounds like some Discovery Channel nonsense. 3.3 feet could be huge. The last one wasn't very high, it's the speed & amount of water that do the damage. Scientists measure the energy of the wave, which is the amount of mass and how fast it's moving. Also, breaking waves are more about the sea floor, not the amount of energy, yes a high front and crash looks impressive but that actually dissapates energy and prevents it from travelling inland, a steady swell is more dangerous.
