A lot of the best bassists (technically) don't really play any phat beats. It's just loads of quick slap solos, nothing meaty. They lose track of what the bass is supposed to do.
I recommend you check out a lot of Motown songs, anything in which James Jamerson played on.
Muse have the odd good bassline.
As you already mentioned, Paul Macca is an excellent, and underated bassist, check out 'Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey' by The Beatles and also 'Hey Bulldog'.
