I agree that the SBs flop overcall is scary, and I like speedlimits line of checking the turn and re-evaluating a lot better. That way, I can cheaply/easily lay down if UTG+1 bets and the SB wakes up.
At the time, I guess I was just afraid of giving a free card to something like JT.

The overcall I would generally assume represents huge strength or a stronger draw than JT. I think that had a 6 or J hit, it would be tough to continue going forward in the hand. If UTG+1 takes the impetus if you turn check, then you're in great position to make a decision.
