They're speculative hands, and played out of position they can be painful. Since you're often dominated, you have to hit the flop pretty hard. Being dominated and having to act first will often cost you money when you are faced with a raise.

I'm sure you'll find posts on the topic, but also take a look at Small Stakes Hold'em - this topic gets excellent treatment there that will tell you about all you need to know about these types of hands.
