he killed the other rat because he was a witness to what happened and because he didn't trust any remnant of costello's organization. pure self-preservation. also easier to keep your stories straight when there's only one person talking.
dignam either killed him out of pure revenge on his own, or because the gf tipped him off. i would love it if it was just pure revenge.
