My reasoning on the turn when the ace hit:
1. If one of my opponents has an ace he will likely bet it and i can go for a c/r to build the pot. If I bet out he will probably only call. The problem here is that passive opponents who have a weak or medium strong ace will often only make a small turn bet. When I raise I demonstrate so much strength that my opponent either folds right away or to my river bet (at least to a sizeable one).
2. If nobody has an ace they will likely fold to my bet, but maybe attempt a little bluff after I check.
