It's a fair question, indeed. I would just first refer you to my earlier post that said:

And if that still doesn't satisfy you, then I don't know what to say. Yes, of course, you may hate this record. You may always hate the Decemberists. But the point is that disliking their previous work really doesn't *necessarily* mean you'll dislike The Crane Wife.

So I find it defeatist and irrelevant to talk about their earlier stuff being "terrible" in a thread about their new stuff.
