I don't necessarily see it as an excuse. As all art is stolen from other art, implicitly or not. So even if an avant-garde film is utter tripe, it allows other artists, more talented, or simply perhaps better adapt at constructing and synthesizing these radical ideas, the ability to do so.
"a small troop of highly skilled soldiers, explores [sic] the terrain ahead of a large advancing army and plots a course for the army to follow."
Visionaries plot the course, they may not necessarily be the best at actually getting you there.
