Don't tell him a thing until you accept the other position. He may still have pull over there and could your offer revoked. Don't believe it doesn't happen. Just don't be dishonest, but do not lay your cards on the table.
Tell him you have not made a decision, which is true since you haven't formally accepted their proposal. Make sure your new job is locked and loaded before you ditch this one.
