Re: Big Loss in One Session

I usually quit if I'm down 30 big bets. I wanted to see if I could turn things around. Due to bad luck or bad play or both, I couldn't do it. I'm going back to quitting when I'm down 30.

Re: Early Position Starting Hands

I do remember one hand at the 8-16 table, not the day of my big loss, but the day before when I was winning. The table had gotten very passive so I limped in with pocket 2s UTG. I flopped a set and...

Re: river fold? 8/16 live

[ QUOTE ]
Paying off on the river when you're beat = small mistake
Folding the river with the best hand = large mistake

You summed it up perfectly.

Re: Early Position Starting Hands

What is VPIP and LP? If I'm first into a pot I always raise from any position in an attempt to steal the blinds. If someone is in steal position I do consider that when I'm defending.

Re: Big Loss in One Session

Thanks for your comment. I'm new to poker and that's why I'm asking if these kinds of swings are normal. Judging from the responses losing 50 BB is not an abnormal swing.

Re: Early Position Starting Hands

I never claimed to be a poker expert or even a decent player. I'm just learning. I think this is a great forum and I want to hear from people who know what they are talking about. Learning from books...

Re: Early Position Starting Hands

What if there is one maniac who loves to raise and re-raise with bad hands and usually goes to the river no matter what?

Re: Early Position Starting Hands

OK, how about at a loose 8-16 table, with 4-5 people seeing most of the flops.

Re: river fold? 8/16 live

I think since the pot was big enough it was worth the call. I'm learning the hard way that, people bluff a lot on the river when they've missed or are trying to represent top pair on the board. I try...

Yes, I agree I may play too loose. Please read my post that I just submitted titled "Early Position Starting Hands".

Early Position Starting Hands

At almost every table I play I am one of the tightest if the not the tightest player, but I’m not sure if I really play tight enough. I’ve read many starting hand charts and it seems to be pretty...

Re: Big Loss in One Session

I started to write girl friend and then changed it too fiance in my last post. I wasn't trying to say that I am engaged to a girl:) I just read it and it sounds funny. She is female.

Re: Big Loss in One Session

I've been subcribing to Card Player for about a year and my favorite column is Bob Ciaffone's. He gives straight forward good advice. My girl fiance thinks I'm nuts for buying so many poker books,...

Re: Big Loss in One Session

Doug,

After 400 hours of 3-6 and 4-8 I was only averaging 1/2 big bet per hour profit. I consider that barely breaking even. After hearing over and over how a person can't beat the rake I decided...

Re: Big Loss in One Session

That's a good point. I know when I'm winning people react to that also and will lay down more hands because 'I always have it'. I've also watched my stack go up 30 big bets, go down to negative 15...

Re: Big Loss in One Session

You are right. I'm sure I was more on tilt than I realized but it does not account for that big a loss. I agree with you about always working to stay off tilt. Yesterday was my best effort at...

Re: Big Loss in One Session

I'm still in shock about how well I'm taking the loss, but I know it's because I played a good game all day. I'm sure I was on tilt a little bit, because it is always harder to play when losing. It...

Re: Big Loss in One Session

Thanks for the reply. I've won 60-70 big bets in about 4 hours playing 3-6 a couple of times. Yesterday was the first time I've ever lost more than 30 big bets in a session. I moved up in limits...

Pot Odds

I understand the idea that a good bet is one in which you are getting better odds on your money than the probability of making your hand. If the pot is giving me 10 to 1 on my money and it is 4 to 1...

Big Loss in One Session

I play limit Texas Hold 'em about one or two times per week. This year I've played around 500 hours. I'm winning such a small amount that I consider myself a break even player. I'm learning and I...

Re: The Rake in Low Limit Hold \'em

These are great replies to my orignal post. I keep great records of every penny I win and lose. I don't write down the session time but using a pretty close average time per session I am making about...

The Rake in Low Limit Hold \'em

I play a lot of 3-6 and 4-8 low limit hold 'em in casinos. Every time I hear discussions about the rake in low limit hold 'em I hear different stories. Some authorities seem to say that "even Phil...
