I'd guess (don't know the math) that the variance would be higher playing a shorter stack though. 30 buyins would probably be enough, but I don't know how safe that...

with $40 buy ins, 1k should be fine, just drop back if you lose 200-300. You should be fine though, especially if you know how to play 40BB deep (which is a pretty easy stack size to play well).
