Re: Fantasy / Science Fiction book series

This is the first I've heard of Jordan dying. "The Eye of the World" was the first fantasy book I ever read. I found a copy in a box outside a used bookstore for a quarter about 16 years ago. ...

Re: Why Russ Meyer Matters

This is my happening, and it freaks me out!

I'm a huge Russ Meyer fan. Seven of his films came out on DVD in France a few years ago before they were available in the States, and I snatched them...

Re: A Modern Reading List for High School?

SoloAJ,

I'm from Atlanta.

I am pretty opinionated when it comes to public education. It's always struck me as government-funded baby-sitting, catering to a non-existent "average."

Re: A Modern Reading List for High School?

Just read the article and list from the OP, and it seems the author and I are in agreement about some things.

A couple of her choices seemed odd, though. Dickens I'd avoid. If students are...

Re: A Modern Reading List for High School?

I disagree that Ender's Game is too hefty for them. Most students that age (and younger) feel they can relate to Ender. I think this is a good choice.

The Things They Carried is excellent...

Re: Best Films of the 21st Century

I'd have to put The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou on my list, as well as The Proposition.

I don't keep up with what films are popular/lauded by critics, so I have no idea if others are familiar...

Re: Anyone drink a milk substitute?

I'm not comfortable with the idea of drinking a big glass of milk, so I didn't have any problem switching to non-dairy milk-type products. I would imagine that drinking a cold glass of soy milk...

Re: I like Americans

I lived in Germany for a year, and I still like Germans. It's a pity how little national pride they have (although understandable). They're good people. And Katy is right; the men can be very...

Re: I like Americans

I've met some Brits I really like, but for some reason, I always feel like I'm offending them. Northern Brits I find much more laid-back and friendly than southern, and much easier to click with.

Re: Books: What are you reading tonight?

[ QUOTE ]
Crime and Punishment is one that's going to be hard to finish if you don't just submerge yourself in it and read it through as quick as you can. I loved the book, but the business with...

Re: The Quitting Smoking Thread

I've been considering moving to pipes. The tobacco actually smells good when burned and is much tastier and less harmful than cigarettes.

Unfortunately, I'm 5'3 and female. I just couldn't pull...

Re: Books: What are you reading tonight?

I also tend to read a lot of books at the same time. Lately, though, I can't seem to finish any of them.

Reading:
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor...

I'm just reading The Master and Margarita now. Hadn't read it since university, and I think I like it even more now.

I went to order the Easy Way books, and the review just cracked me up. Last line: Buy it! It's cheaper than hypnotherapy!

Thanks for the suggestion about doing push-ups. I like that. Can't...

The Quitting Smoking Thread

I've read a couple suggestions for starting a thread on this, so here goes.

I've smoked for 11 years off and on. It's time I give up for good.

Haven't had a cigarette for 30 hours. I have a...

Re: Is this a good proposal ??

Dunno about the last suggestion. Great potential for swooning at a pirate proposal, especially if you're wearing a sword.

Re: July\'s Bastille & Sevens Thread

My deepest dive to date is 38.4m. That's likely to be beaten in the very near future. Most of the people I dive with go 40+ regularly, and we're planning on taking a weekend trip soon to some of...
