Avoid Capital One if you can; my first credit card was from them, but they're a real hassle to deal with. FWIW, from what I've heard AMEX tends to have very good customer service.

Correct. Read the terms carefully, but the nice thing about Discover is that some of their cards have NO balance transfer fees. Just be sure you don't inadvertently do a cash advance.
