Age I think may be a factor -- younger girls may be quicker to offer than older ones. My girlfriend of 3+ years has never offered (nor have I ever thought she would or should) to pay for anything...

I'm a big fan of M. Night -- I really like Village, even though it's his weakest effort.

My favorite of his is Unbreakable. Signs I also think is quite a bit better than most give it credit for...
