Re: 50% returns on small amounts?

DC,

Any thoughts on the delisting of MXIM? It seems like an unusual situation, given that it was an S&P500 component. Might this be one of those "it's not as bad as it looks" situations?

Re: A Compendium of Sklansky Fallacies

I has a theory:

Imagine you've always been smarter (more informed, better with logic, etc) than just about everyone else around you. In any non-stupid argument with a random person, you're a...

Good article on US balance of payments

I found it explained the macroeconomic issues quite well, with a wide range of reasonable opinions represented.

Accounting/tax question about restating earnings

Many companies are restating earnings now as a result of options backdating issues. I have a few questions about the mechanics.

1. If company A restates earnings such that they earned 1M less than...

Re: Investing in Small/Micro Cap Stocks

DC,

How often, in analyzing a potential investment, do you consciously think of what Sklansky calls his Fundamental Theorem of Investment? I.e. you consider company X undervalued by 50%. Do you...

2/5NL cash at the WSOP (mississippi straddle)

I played in the 2/5NL at the WSOP, and ran across the "mississippi straddle". It's a button straddle, with the betting order starting at the SB instead of UTG. Button gets the preflop button. Seems...

Re: Kid can jump over cars

World-class long jumpers can clear cars length-wise. Any D1 college long jumper (and probably many college high jumpers) can easily jump cars width-wise. There are probably 500 people in the US alone...

Re: Convergence in probability vs. almost-sure convergence challenge

[ QUOTE ]
Every Y_k is a uniform distribution on [0,1].

1_[x,y] is a function that is 1 on the interval [x,y] and zero everywhere else.

For Y_k those intervals get thinner as k grows, thus...

Re: Convergence in probability vs. almost-sure convergence challenge

[ QUOTE ]
Y_1 = 1_[0,1]
Y_2 = 1_[0,1/2], Y_3 = 1_[1/2,1/1]
Y_4 = 1_[0,1/4], Y_5 = 1_[1/4,2/4], Y_6 = 1_[2/4,3/4], Y_7= 1_[3/4,1]
...

Obviously Y_k converges in probability but not...

Convergence in probability vs. almost-sure convergence challenge

A probability theory challenge, for those that know their set-theoretic probability foundations.

If a sequence converges almost surely, this implies that the sequence also converges in...

Re: Golf Digest Article: The New Swing

This isn't all that revolutionary. It's pretty similar to:

1. Jim Hardy's one-plane swing. Differences here are minor: Hardy focuses on arm-travel on the through-swing whereas P&B focus on body...

Re: Range Finders, GPS Discussion

I think the rangefinder is more valuable than the GPS devices, especially on courses you play frequently. Accurate distances matter most inside 100yds. Unless I'm mistaken, the GPS devices don't...
