To answer the OP's question I would almost always raise AK preflop. I say almost always because obviously there are no "always" situations in poker.

I think you are doing yourself a great dis-service if you read a book and take it's word as gospel, even a book as reputable as SS. For one, Doyle, in SS2, admittedly gives much of the same advice...
