I'm confused - 30 bbs deep, why can't we limp for set value and fold to a raise if necessary, with no real harm done to our stack?

I was at his first table yesterday in the $33R satellite and he was pushing every premium hand pre-flop regardless of pot size - push with AQ or 99 for T3000 to pick up T30 in blinds. I didn't know...
