No matter what I do on the flop I'm not chasing anyone out for 1 BB and even if I can check raise, that's only dropping the odds to 10:1. Betting for value is something I need to get a better handle...

I'm in the middle of a -387 BB swing right now. Even my AA hands haven't held up. And ys I'd call the river but I'd expect to see AA, KK with CO capping it preflop.

The only thing you're behind are AA, KK, 77, 44, 33. He called your raise so you might be up against AA/KK but he probably would have capped it. I'd reraise and expect to get shown AK/AQ/KQs/JJ-99...

Thanks for all the comments so far. Taking the free card on the turn will definitely help reduce my downswings as that's 2-4BB every time it comes up (and it's gonna happen more often than I hit). ...

Could you please explain why you hate the preflop and turn? I just went back and looked at SSH and even it calls for a pre-flop raise from the button with AJ suited so why was this bad?

Chase out a Ax to improve you chances of winning if you hit an A, and it gets money from the other 2 players on the turn since they would likely fold to a bet on the river if you hit your flush.
