Breaking a Bottle (for bar fight purposes)

We've all seen a movie or tv show where a guy grabs a beer bottle, smashes it against a counter, and proceeds to shove the jagged edges in some guy's face.

My question is, how practical is this? Is there an optimal way to hit the bottle to make sure it breaks and you don't look like an idiot? Is there a significant risk of shattering the whole thing and slicing your hand up on the broken glass?

I would like to hear from anyone with experience on this subject and the results that followed.

I haven't done it, but i hear that smashing upwards on the bottom of the bar is better rather than smashing in a downwards arc.

As for hand lacerations / breaking enough but not too much of the bottle, can't help you there.

I've seen this done a few times, it's a great pub trick over here.....

A nice clean break just at the base of the bottle on a hard surface seems to work well, producing a very effective weapon. Would certainly be my weapon of choice for a plain hijacking. In such a scenario you could buy two bottles of raw spirit from duty free, and use the contents to create a small fire to induce panic/confusion. Anyway, i digress.....

I have never done this but....

If your beer is almost full, you can pop the open mouth with
the palm of your hand really hard, and the bottom of the bottle will break out/off. Chipping a few chards off afterwards for sharpness would be easy at that point.

I'd say it's completely impractical, anyone who does it is probably a crap fighter, it's more for show, to intimidate. It's like the 'tough' guy who pushes someone to start a fight, they are actually pushing them away because they want to win without having to get in a real fight. Also, breaking a bottle seems like the start of the fight, why not jsut take your chance at the element of surprise, clock him nicely on the jaw and end it before it starts.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that anyone who's ever contemplated the practicality of this will never do it.

you're more likely to cut yourself than you are to end up with a useable weapon trying this with modern beer bottles. most will break near the neck, ie, where you're holding it. they use special props in the movies.

You guys remember when 2-bit Matthew's smashed that bottle and tossed Ponyboy his switch? Man, that sure was tough. Brb, I need me a weed.

The best method is to break the bottle over the head of your opponent.
