Star Trek Actors That Should Have Done More
 

Yeah, I know. Star Trek isn't exactly known for its superb acting, but there are a few actors that whose abilities really came together by then of their series. (Star Trek haters, stay away from this thread.)

Jonathan Frakes is my first thought. I loved the character Riker, and thought Frakes did a fantastic job of capturing his strength in leadership, as well his joviality and playfulness. That playfulness was often displayed through very subtle gestures and movements, in scenes that weren't specifically written to convey that characteristic. That, to me, is a good sign solid acting - conveying the whole character's personality throughout, without relying on the screenwriting for opportunities. To the best of my knowledge, Frakes has never had a significant role outside Star Trek since it began.

The other name that came to mind is Avery Brooks. He was a little rough around the edges in the first few seasons, but from the middle of the series on, he did a great job of showing the passion and strength of Sisko. Brooks is excellent at conveying determination and drive, and after a few years on DS9, learned to balance that in a way that was a little more believable than his first TV character, Hawk (Spencer: For Hire). Brooks was fantastic in American History X, and I thought for sure that role would land him more in Hollywood.

Patrick Stewart is another name that comes to mind. Although he has been in a decent amount since Star Trek (and was well known as a stage actor before), I think he's grossly under-used in Hollywood today.

Brett Spiner was solid as the lead research scientist in Independence Day. His Night Court episodes were good as well.

Wheaton's book is actually a great read imo if you want to see details on why he took the path he did from Star Trek.

I include him only as a "wish he had more current success in hollywood, even though he's doing hawesome at life".

How about that black dude from the second generation, the one with the weird visor across his eyes, who starred in Roots. He started off a very highly regarded sensation, and now just has a very modest little show on PBS that barely uses his acting talent at all.

If George Takei had come out of the closet 30 years earlier, he could have become one of the most visible advocates for gay rights.

Brett Spiner was solid as the lead research scientist in Independence Day. His Night Court episodes were good as well.

The problem is that Brent Spiner just so happens to be hideously ugly.

Haha, he played the role of anal dick well in Out To Sea, as well. I just never got the impression that he was quite ready for a solid leading role in Hollywood.
