Should I have taken a stab at it here? His limp/re-raise made me feel he was going for a check raise on the flop.

I think checking the flop is fine there given no read, but I guess you could also bet it straight and see where your at. No read I would probably check behind. You don't want to create a big popt with your bad hand.
