5max vs. 6max

Hi!

I played quite sucessfull on 6mx limit tables (1/2-3/6)on several sites.
Now I started playing at a Boss Network Skin and their shorthanded tables have just 5 seats.
Some ideas how to play 5 max compared to 6 max?

Really shouldn't be much different, alot of times playing 6 max there are 5 or less players there at the time and generally you may loosen up your starting hands a tiny bit, but not much.

Not much difference, I wouldn't loosen up much if at all, the rake is still horrible.

the main difference is that there is one less player

You're going to get in a few more 3-handed and 4-handed situations preflop, I think the average at 5-max is like 4.3 players on ongame, and a higher proportion of pots will be in blind steal/defending situations.

i would advise you to ignore the statements like "loosen up" or "don't loosen up", they don't make any sense. play as if utg in 6max has folded. that's it.

I've mostly played full ring and when starting to move to shorthanded I've certainly enjoyed 6-max more than 5-max - for whatever reason I feel more at home there. This seems to be a sentiment I share with a few others in a same situation at a Finnish poker strategy site.

I don't try to consciously adjust my game from 6- to 5-max, and you probably shouldn't. Anyways, I'm still very much learning shorthanded so don't take my word for it.
