I've been incredibly happy with the Canon HV20. Amazing picture quality. IMO, unless you are on a tight budget HD is the way to go and the Canon HV20 is the current frontrunner in handheld HD cams.

Budget? If you plan on being rough with it, get a decent cheap no-frills one. I have a canon that cost $250 that does the job.
