Stop making bad river calls

In NL, I go through these phases where I keep making bad, loose river calls. I would insta-call and the villian would show the nuts or some slowplayed monster.

I get into this state of mind where I play poker too fast and practically play unconsciously. In order to stop doing this, I have been forcing myself to SLOW DOWN.

Everytime I have a big river decision, I take my hand off the mouse and set a timer for 30 seconds.
I force myself to think and not click away like a madman.

Hope this helps someone

River call/fold decisions are always math problems.

While reading strategy forum posts, practice calculating pot odds on river decisions, then using poker stove to get your equity vs an opponent's hand range to determine if you have a +EV call or not. Then, when in a hand, you have done so many detailed calculations that you can make ball-park estimates on pot odds vs equity to make better decisions on the end.

There are no bad river calls, you get to see their cards.

There are no bad river calls, unless you are playing no limit and lose all your chips when you incorrectly think a big river bet is a bluff

One big bet for information is useful once or twice.

And additionally useful in that it prevents people bluffing you on the river.

But don't get carried away with this idea - keep in mind that if you are expecting to make 1 or 2 BB an hour live, calling down the river twice here, costs you one or two hour's pay.
