Noob VPIP Quesion

This is probably a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find a useful answer yet. I understand that VP$IP means voluntarily put money in pot, and I understand that it is a very useful statistic, but I don't understand how it is calculated, or how it is expressed. Moreover, I'm not sure what a target VPIP is for TAG player vs a LAG player might be. Sorry for the noob question, but any advice or links to advice would be real helpful. This last one may be unrelated, but I was also wondering what it means if a player is playing "forty four / four", for example. Thanks

From my understanding:

if a player is 44/4, it means his VPIP is 44, and his PFR is 4
These are expressed in percentages.
ie: the 4 means he preflop raises 4% of this hands
An ideal stat that a majority of regulars maintain is 18/12
Meaning 18% hands that you are dealt are played, and 12% of total hands dealt are raised pf

I'm not sure if this varies when specifically facing a LAG, but that is an excellent question that i'll be interested in hearing responses to.

Re: Noob VPIP Quesion

A lag will play lots of hands and a TAG will play much less.
LAGS will have VPIP over 30 while TAGS can have as little as less than 15 VPIP.

I used to play extremely tight and my VPIP was 12 (which is considered as little as you can have to be profitable)
