Tourney: Question about player being blinded out and BB raise
 

Hi, got a question that I was arguing with a couple of friends about.
Home Tourney, blinds at 1k-2K level, Big blind has 2k but has left the game and is not coming back, we have been blinding him out for a few rounds.

As stated BB has 2k with 1-2k blinds. Action folds around to button, who goes all in for about 8k. SB folds.

Now, does button automatically win the hand or do we proceed with both the button and BB flipped up and the had run with the BB winning if he has a better hand,even if he is not there?

If you could provide a link or section of Robert's rules that defines this, it would be awesome. Also, there was some argument of live vs. online poker and that there might be difference. If there is a difference, can anyone point that out?

Live poker, by custom, BB hand is dead.

Online, I think they blind the hand off as if it's a disconnected machine.

If you know where Robert's Rules are, you can do a search and find a reference, I believe. I don't have time to look for you.

In live poker the big blind has always been dead in this spot. Before the rule was introduced that all-in hands must be turned up the blind was dead because he wasn't there to turn up his cards.

For live tourneys, a player's hand is killed as soon as it is dealt to him not he is not there. Obviously in home tourneys we wait for guys who have gone to the can.

Online, a player sometimes has all-in protection so he can actually win one hand while sitting out. Usually this all-in protection is a one time thing and next time he will be out.

In live play the hand is declared dead. For on line play, each site posts there rules, you could ask/check the sites but I think it would be wrong to solve your question by checking a poker sites rules. It could vary for one site to another. Its best to go by robert rules of poker.

The TDA rules cover this, see rule 8:

He's not at his seat, his hand is dead.

Obviously in a home game we give folks slack on this one, usually the common practice being as long as you are at your chair when its time for your action, or on your way, your hand isn't killed.

Here, the guy isn't at his seat his hand is dead, he doesn't ever get to have a live hand, as in the next example: suppose the absent player in the BB wasn't all in, but had chips left, but the pot is limped around, his hand doesn't get to stick around for the flop, its dead, even though he could have checked it if he were there.

Just had it happen on Pokerstars, I was SB and the BB was sitting out. It was foleded around to me and I clicked the call button by mistake instead of the raise one. Our chips in went the pot and then the BB hand was folded and pot awarded to me
