Would variable buy-in MTTs work?

I am thinking that it might be fun to have variable buy-in MTTs where the players receive chips in proportion to their buy-in. Let's say, the possible buy-in range is $50-$200, those who buy in for $50 get 750 in chips, for $100 it's 1500, for $200 - 3000, etc. This way players with smaller bankrolls could participate in such tourneys and play the short stack, while those who can afford it would usually buy in for the full amount and have the advantage of a deep stack. This would be somewhat similar to rebuy tourneys, but without the craziness of multiple rebuys.

I am not sure if this idea has already been suggested or tried. Since I've never seen this, I figured I'd throw it in for discussion.

They exist, 1 r 1addon as well as just regular rebuys.

On the topic of random tourney format ideas do any sites use the modified shootout format?

24h poker had tournaments with unlimited rebuys for the first hour (no need to be shortstacked to rebuy - every E0.25 or E0.5 gets you more chips). I never tried one though, and its not quite the same as your idea.

Short stackers aren't a problem in cash games. At all. We should def give them a way to play in tourneys too.
