Is this a legal way to bet in tournaments?
 

I say a lot of people put a bunch of chips in their hands and then either drop enough for a call or a raise. This seems kind of like a string bet, as you don't know if they are raising or how much until they put the chips down. Is this a legal play?

I see that every day in cash games and tournaments.

I just sit there and let them finish before I react.

Some places are really nitty about betting lines and make the chips in hand play. Most places follow what should be the norm for no limit - wait until the players hands come to rest outside the betting area to make a determination on what action has just occurred.

i.e. wait until villain stops and you'll be good. Be careful if you do it, as it opens you up to angle shoots or being forced to bet more than you want when you are in a nitty room.

The only time I've seen a problem with this is when a guy brings a handful of chips forward and then tries to check. A couple of different times an argument ensued, floor called, and the forward motion ruled a bet.

No one ever bitched about this till the wpt came on tv. Ironically, they explain NOTHING about how to bet.

Or they'll have a wad of chips in their hand when they check. that's ruled a check where I play.

Where I play bringing chips forward commits you to making a bet, period. Usually what will happen is when someone checks holding a stack of chips, they'll be warned once before being forced to make a bet. The "betting line" per se is considered to be the back edge of the cards (closest to the center of the table).

I disagree. This has been a controversy for at least the 15 years I've been playing.
