What is a metagame?

Does anyone have a proper defintion of a metagame, because when I stumble upon this word people use it in different context.

Metagame generally means psychological aspects of poker. I know that you know that I know you have a big hand, etc.

You do something now that will pay off down the road.

For example, you win a hand by bluffing, and you show your cards. One might say you showed for metagame purposes, in hopes that later on you will get paid off when you have a big hand.

More often, it's used as an excuse when people make bad calls.
