Is he right to ask for half the gas money? (Roadtrip etiquette theory)

So last Thursday night, my friend (U of W alum) mentions during the day that he was taking off Friday after work to Vegas (We live in So Cal) with plans for a crazy weekend, Wisc vs UNLV game included. Then at the end of the conversation, he mentions something along the lines of "You can come too if you'd like". Since I'm trying to get back into cards after a long hiatus, I decide to take him up on his offer. Fast forward to today, out of nowhere, he comes and asks to split half the gas bill. I strongly protest based on the fact that a)He invited me and b)He would've gone anyway, regardless of what I had decided

Who is right in this case?

Would it have made a difference if I asked to join?

Why not sleep in his hotel room for free too since he was going to get one anyway?

It's telling that your friend found it necessary to ask about the gas bill before you guys even started on the road trip. You must be a real tight wad.

I bet he's regretting trying to be a nice guy and inviting you to come with on his awesome weekend extravaganza.

OP, you should be offended that he thinks you're such a cheapskate that he thought he had to ask, because OF COURSE you were going to split the gas.
