Potential AC dealing questions

So my [censored] license from the Casino Control Commission finally came today. I am about to sign up with a school and the whole school process takes about a month.

I guess my questions are:

What should I be doing now to the time I start school? (I have been practicing pitching down cards or a few months now and would say I am pretty good at it, but still need work so I know that is one.)

After school ends how do I go about applying for a job? (I understand that I may need to be a tourney dealer before getting a cash dealer job. I also understand AC's seasonal nature and that it may be difficult to get a job now, but I just graduated college and now is when I am able to start looking for a job.) Basically, who do I talk to about applying? Maybe where should I go to first? Is asking for the graveyard shift more helpful in my getting a job?

Thanks everyone for your help throughout this whole process for me and thanks in advance for your answers.

P.S. I own the 2p2 dealing book.

Please be an expert in all the rules.

Learn how to shuffle really quickly.

Good luck.

If you already know the technique for pitching cards and and shuffling I would say ditch the school completely. At the school I went to they basically taught you:

1)Hand rankings
2)The shuffle
3)Card pitching
4)Rules for hold 'em, omaha, and stud

I would assume you already know the rules to the games.

I disagree with the skipping school part, it's only a month of classes and a few hundred bucks, call Professional Dealer's School in Pleasantville. It's the slow time of year for dealer schools, and the classes are tiny so you have a lot more instructor and table time.

Yeah, you will learn the basics, but you'll want some practice doing side pots and making change, taking rake and so on. If you don't have any games at all I'd seriously recommend taking at least one class at a school, where people with experience can help you.

Pitching cards and shuffling you can work on in your own time, but add handling cheques to that list.

Besides that, you get to meet a few people that can get you hired. At PDS there are floors from Borgata and Caesars teaching classes, and though you won't start there, you can get in as a tourney dealer with a little experience. Plus, you can get recruited from school and so on.

Skipping school is not an option these days as jobs are hard to come by. A lot of the auditions are announced to the schools only. You should try networking, if you play poker get in there and meet the floor people and supers. Be friendly to the school owners too, they are the ones who decide who gets the auditions in some cases (more for other games than poker but it can't hurt). You are definitely getting into this a little late and you already missed the WPT/USPC hirings for September. Taj only hired 3 people this year (IRC it was 20 a couple years ago) and two of them are very good, the third is probably a relative of someone (taking a wild guess because she's Asian).

Circuit event hits Harrah's in December, that is probably the best chance of getting your foot in the door.

PS - No, you won't be making $65k/year, regardless of what you might read in some of these threads. Also, you're almost certain to need to know another game besides poker to get hired now, it's much more difficult to start out with poker only. Even the crap-toke houses like Ballys and Hilton require at least a second game. Just a heads up.
