does anyone know where the advancing button rule originated? What state?

Nope,

but Ill give you a bump and tell you that in California it has been the norm for a while, I believe in Nevada it was the opposite(dont think its changed, but havent played cards in LV in so long forgot.)

There are two different advancing button rules. The most common one originated in California for the casino to collect money (the button paid money to the casino so it couldn't be dead and the same person couldn't have it twice).

There is an older forward moving button used in NL and PL. The button moves one seat forward from where it was and the players after the button put up the blinds. The idea here is that the blind position is important and the blinds aren't. Traditionally missed blinds do not have to be made up in PL and NL.
