Playing Blind
 

So as I'm sure everyone who plays LHE has experienced, there are people out there, especially in the mid-level limit games that limp in with total garbage hands like unconnected, unsuited, mid-high card hands in early/mid position (e.g. 94 offsuit).

My question is this: What do you guys think is the psychology of a player who plays those kinds of hands, but folds others? Like what is going on inside their head when they look at 94 off and put in money, but look at another hand (which we never see) and fold it?

Like on a purely aesthetic level, doesn't 9-4 offsuit look ugly to an average person? Or J-3 off? Maybe my general perception is off?

OK, if this sounds like a whining post, I apologize. But I'm honestly attempting to ask a legitimate question so I can understand the mentality of that type of player better in my 20/40 game.

BTW, these are not people who are brand new to the game, but regulars in a 20/40 game I see fairly often over the course of months, so it can't just be written off as noob-ness.

The psychology behind it doesn't go much further than "IF I FLOP A MONSTER I CAN STACK THE TABLE". You know. Because when they're jamming the 994 flop their hand is so disguised. Or possibly they're trying to "mix up" their game but are going about it in a very poor fashion. Their game is leaky, spewtastic, full of holes etc and you should have a very easy time crushing them playing a really solid, ABC game.

There are real and game theory advantages to balancing ranges with any of your worst hands a certain percentage of the time (playing specifically 94o every time is of course disgusting). Mostly this is for betting and raising though, calling with any two without the button just seems sick.

Don't you just get dealt an hand and have that feeling that you are going to catch. Does not matter the holding I am sure we all get it - I know I do. The better players tend to still fold but I'm sure we all make wierd decisions. I think that is the reason.

Also I think we all have dumb favorite hands. Mine is 96o. Why? I couldn't tell you and it is not the fact that if you turn the cards around it makes a different number.

You're right, it is the perfect "trap hand." Losing players call raises to this kind of muck in the blinds all the time and fritter away their bank roll. Quite a "trap."
