South Africa

I'm going to South Africa for 20 days in September. I'm flying into Cape Town and flying out of JoBurg. I'm 25, single, and going by myself, so I'm looking to have a good time as well as see all the sites. I've seen Peachy's thread, but I'm open to suggestions from anyone who's been there or lives there. I'm especially looking for advice on where to stay in JoBurg before my flight out. The stories about the city proper kind of scare me, so I'm considering staying in Sandton. Anyone know how convenient that is to the airport?

How long are you in JHB for ? Consider staying in Rosebank as it is a bit more central while still being far away from the inner city. SA is a fairly big spread out country and our cities mirror this, they are big urban sprawls (like Los Angeles unlike San Francisco). Public transport is also completely underdeveloped and inadequate. Therefore you should seriously consider renting a car for your trip.

I am sure you will be able to find a reasonably priced shuttle service from your hotel to the airport.

Thanks, I'll probably be staying in JHB, for 2, maybe 3 nights max. I'm basically using it as a jumping off point for a safari in Kruger and my plane flight out. I'll definitely be renting a car while in Cape Town ,and then taking the Baz Bus along the coast up to JHB. I may rent a car in JHB depending on how things work out.

I spent about a month and a half in and around capetown.

The downtown area has cops on every corner at night, so its very safe. However once your out of there sight, be careful. Our hostel was a 5 minute walk from downtown. Only two people walked back alone and both got mugged.
In cape town dine at mama africa. Amazing food and live music. We went with about 8 people, and everyone loved it.

Also, the restaurant mama africa is really awesome. Great food, live music. Everyone loved it.
