Folding KK pre-flop???

In what situations can you fold KK preflop?

Here's mine which i didn't fold. 5 players left in a 25 person tourney. Me and chip leader hold over 3/5 of the chips, and are just about even. A 3rd player makes a pre-flop raise to 13k, chip leader goes all in for 80k. I look down and see KK, and have about 70k in front of me, and the blinds are 2000/4000.

I think, think, think, get the clock called on me, and the last thing that goes through my head is, "If we were playing for more money, I think I'd muck this hand, and I call". Chip leader had aces, I get knocked out in 5th, he wins tourney 10 mins later with the monster stack he had. The buy-in was only $50, so that definately influenced my decision. But friends are telling me its impossible to lay down KK pre-flop. Is it possible?

Laying down KK is correct if villain has AA.

[x] strategy post

Well one situation is pretty obvious. Say your 2nd in chips in a satellite and theres 16 left with top 15 getting the same ticket/prize. It's correct to fold KK even AA in this spot if a stack that can severely cripple you or bust you gets involved. By folding you are almost guaranteed the ticket, especially if there are some short stacks.

Other than that, it's just about feel with KK. If you have kings and raise it, and you get reraised, and then a super tight nit comes over the top he'll usually have AA there and sometimes you just gotta let it go.

This is an easy fold because you can only win in a showdown. If you could reraise to like 240k you could maybe play the hand (I say maybe because your 3rd raise might not have much fold equity, thus rendering it useless). Your opponent (the 80k guy) is a 2:1 favorite; he can either win by getting you and the other guy to fold, or by having the best hand at showdown. If the other guy comes along as well you're probably an even bigger dog. You can only win by showing down the best hand. Given how ace magnets play out in tournaments, it's such an easy fold, even if you are positive you currently have the best hand.[/strategy]

i read in the little green book that Phil Gordon once laid down his Cowboys when Phil Helmuth came over the top. Helmuth said something like * what you had Gordon, Ace Queen? * and Phil Gordon replied * no Phil, only Kings...* Phil Gordon then managed to finish 5th or something, ahead of Helmuth.

Read more books and stop getting stacked like a noob.
