Blocking Out Noise: Canal Phones (?)

If I'm trying to block out noise as my primary goal (specifically other peoples' music) am I better off with noise-canceling phones or canal phones?

I'm not really a sound geek so sound quality is not a huge deal to me. Affordability is though.

Either is fine. Just depends on if u want to wear headphones or put buds in your ears.

Canal phones tend to have better sound but some people don't like them. I would never buy noise cancelling unless I could afford the Sennheiser model. If getting over the ear phones I would buy a pair of relaly good ones that isolate well by the pads sealing your ears.

Canal phones all have different shapes(except the expensive ones where you have your ear canal cast and ship it to the phone manufacturers). Your ear canals themselves can have quite different shapes one from the other(mine do). So you may not always get the fit you like when using canal phones. That will let some sound get in. On the other hand, a perfect seal shuts out sound entirely and can be very comfy, depending on the phone. So you're gambling when getting canal phones. I'd be sure that there is a good return policy. Btw I have canal phones and like them despite the less than perfect fit.

I think isolating canal phones are better than canceling over-ear phones.

Obviously incredibly good canceling over-ear phones are better than low-mid range ($) canal phones.

I'm taking a long plane trip later tonight, and though I have a pair of pretty good isolating canal phones, I picked up a pair of over-ear phones for the comfort factor.

Also, Stellastarr, your avatar is scary as hell.

the Bose noise canceling earphones are VERY effective at blocking noise. more effective than my Ultimate Ears inner canal phones.

Are you using the on-ear headphones or over the ear?

These are awesome and cheap. I've watched movies on trains and planes with them, no problems whatsoever.
