Beau Rivage $1/2 NL best strategy
 

I'm going to play at the beau Sunday for about 8-10 hours (haven't played NL but once live) Decent player (break even slightly up overall).

I've got $700 to play with.

What's the best strategy to play in the $1/2NL game at the Beau. There's no cap as I understand.

My bi-weekly home game is typically $5-20 NL with 5/10 cent blinds. I usually buy-in with 5, lose it fairly quickly showing something dumb and then go into ABC mode and do pretty well (Mike Caro just suggested the same thing in BLUFF last issue..I think).

What do you guys recommend. I'm probably a little tight playing live at the $1/2 but think I can get pretty decent reads/feels for the players.

What should I buy-in with to feel comfortable and have a little room for the suited connectors?

1. $150ish? (gives me around 4.5 buy-ins)
2. $225ish (normal play)
3. $60-80 (play silly short and push a couple of times preflop with top 5 hands and pick-up 50-70 bucks or double up, or lose it all and then ABC it

I'm there to have some fun and to pay for the trip with my wife (we're gonna take your advice and maybe go to BR Prime? at the Beau or go over to Ruth's Chris). Want to try and make about 250-350.

Think I'm better off at the 1/2 instead of the 2/5.

Thoughts. (other than the "Hey, come sit at MY table comments")
I'll be easily recognizable. The panzy rock who tries to only get it all in with the nuts or the best hand.

The game at the Beau can get crazy at times. There can be several players sitting with 2-3K and making huge preflop raises making it hard to play at the stakes you are used to. Watch the tables for a bit and make your table selection accordingly. You need to buy in for at least $200 to have any room to play in that game, but even then you are going to be short.

If nobody beats you to it, give us an update on the reconstruction progress.

I searched around a bit yesterday and really couldn't find many recent pics. I did read, however, that the bridge between Biloxi and Ocean Springs would be partially open in November.

entrepeneur, also check out the Hard Rock Poker Room, it is small, but the play is exteremely soft and it has a rake on teh NL games, not a time drop. If you need any more info, please let me know.

Take what's behind Door (Strategy) #2 & hope for the best, because you'll still be short-stacked for this game....

"Having room to play" implies being able to make post-flop moves.
But for the OP's purposes having never played live before I think it is unwise to recommend that he buy-in for $200 or more.
As he tries to get comfortable at the game he should buy-in for the minimum. You can always add to your stack later as you get more comfortable with the scene. You aren't allowed to take away from your stack though.

New players who are likely to have accidental string-raises and make other noob-mistakes simply should NOT be risking more than they are comfortable with just because the other players have big-stacks too.

Baby steps first.

OK..so I posted too late..checked before I left and no replies..
I'm now back..with less money than i went with.

I have played live before...but mostly 4/8limit...only 1 x limit.

so..here's the short story.

Crap..you're right.

CRRRAAAPPP..you're right.

Without hearing from you guys (my fault)..I bought in with $175 (seemed like I'd have some room).

went ok for 30-45 minutes.

2xs in blind i flopped 2 pair..and had guys calling bets to the river (had about 80 in pot both times)..
River pairs another card higher than mine (guys sucks out) and we chop...He had no idea he was behind (said so)..

JJ (flop A)
QQ (flop A)
A/K (flop low and ugly and 2 players with action before me)
A/Q (J on flop)

tried to find a decent raise size (7-12..position, players...etc)..

You guys are totally right about a deep game and loose.

5 hands raise preflop and total blanks or I was beat.
1 check-raise of my CB on flop for huge.
1 bad call of mine on river with QQ for 40 bucks into 75 pot with an A out there (he checked until river..and i REALLY thought he had the J..turns out..a WEAK Ace)

The above..gg me..
out 175 bucks..
played a little while more..but it just felt like i was getting a little scared (first 1 1/2 hours and I drop 175 bucks-and I've got 10 more to play).

My recap this morning with my wife (who graciously smiled and nodded the entire time)..I told her if I play THAT game..I'd want about 300 with about 2000-3000 in my pocket to play the right way...700 for my play and a little unfortunate beginning just didn't cut it.

I can't stress enough how DEAD ON your comments were (REALLY wish I'd have seen them BEFORE..LOL)

Over all down $185 bucks for trip.

But think I may have landed a deal at the table for $3300...for my work..

I'll be going to the Beau Rivage in Sept, though I think I may make the smart play and mosey on over to the Hard Rock for the softer game. I'm in the process of reading Angel Largay's book, it seems dead on for the low limit NL games. You should try it out, it's the first book that I have read in a while that has actually taught me anything.
