Amazon Prime - is it worth it?

I tend to order a lot of stuff (Christmas presents etc.) from Amazon but usually just wait the 2 weeks or so for free shipping. I'm debating whether it's worth upgrading to their Amazon Prime service.

I'm wondering if it is worth $79 bucks a year to get free 2-day shipping (or $3.99 for overnight) if I need something in a hurry for a gift etc.? Plus I'll sometimes just want one DVD or book that's less than $25, and I find myself buying more just to get free shipping.

Anyone use this and do you think it's worth the 79 bucks/yr?

It's not really a matter of thinking it's worth it or not. You just kind of do the math

To answer your question, yes I have it and I really like it. I like having my stuff as quickly as possible, so it's "worth it" in the sense that I get my stuff and it makes me happy, but I also save a bunch on shipping.

Yes. Part of the reason I'm saying yes is because they auto-signed me up after the free trial unbeknownst to me (didn't read original TOS I guess).

But it's v. good. Just ordered Seinfeld that will be here tomorrow morning for $2 more.

I was super skeptical this was anything but a sucker's move, but I got the free month's trial of it and decided to continue.

It's not just that it's great to get stuff in a day or two, but that Amazon's normal service has sharply deteriorated, as far as delivery time goes. Anyway it sure has for me. They take so long to ship things that it goes out of stock after I order it, etc. Or the two weeks free shipping has sometimes stretched out to as long as a month. The 2-day service fixes that.

Often if I had known it would take 2 or 3 or 4 weeks to get something from Amazon, I would have chosen another seller anyway. And there are somethings that I don't just want "sorta reasonably soon," but would love to have in a couple days. Plus, with Prime, they ship each book individually instead of waiting so long to collect everything into one big pile to ship. Ever have one out of stock or low-stock item hold up a shipment forever? Sucks.

Plus like you said, dicking around to try to get a $25 order every time sucks.

I have it because of the I signed up for the free trial and never canceled. I have to admit it's super handy, and I've used the 3.99 overnight a couple of times. I used to do a lot of shopping on amazon but wanted it earlier than the super saver shipping so I'd just go to a store, but I've pretty much stopped doing that now.

I don't get it because you always get a better deal buying things used on Amazon or just use Price Grabber to find out the cheapest thing. And it's usually not on Amazon. Prime = too expensive.

Shipping for free on Prime vs. 3.99 for a book, or even more, when buying used.
