Re: 7-11 Day

Does that mean free Squishees at the Kwik-E-Mart?

I'd say that I can correctly answer the Final Jeopardy question about 80% of the time, but I missed this one:

Category "Business"

The answer is: The first 24-hour 7-Eleven store opened in this city in 1963.

(None of the contestants got it right. Of course, Trebek spoke condescendingly when he pointed out the clues in the question.)

Answer, and more, in white: The correct answer is Las Vegas. "Seven, eleven! Important numbers in the game of craps! Las Vegas, a 24-hour town...", cajoled Mr Know-It-All quiz show host after we all got it wrong.

At the time, I knew the parent company was called Southland something-or-other, and decided to guess a Southern city. For some reason, I guessed "Dallas".

Now I check the Wiki page and discover that sure enough, the company got its start in Dallas (open from 7 AM to 11 PM, unprecedented long hours at the time), but the first 24-hour store was in Las Vegas.

I never hated Alex Trebek before then.

article

"DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A loaf of bread cost 9 cents, a gallon of milk 56 cents, a dozen eggs was 46 cents, and ice was sold in blocks rather than bags. That’s when convenience retailing got its start in 1927 with a little ice dock providing customers with what they wanted and expanding hours to fit their lifestyle. That small business evolved into what is now 7-Eleven, Inc., the world’s largest convenience retailer with more than 32,400 stores. 7-Eleven celebrates its 80th birthday on – when else? – July 11, 7/11/07, also

known as 7-Eleven® Day.

As has been the tradition for many years, the company will celebrate July 11 with free 7.11-ounce Slurpee® drinks for customers visiting its U.S. stores. Special birthday cups will be available while supplies last. "

From Wiki:

July 11 is known as "7-11 Day", during which participating 7-Eleven stores offer up to 1,000 customers a free 7.11-oz. Slurpee of their choice.

My friends and I recently took a miniroad trip driving to 6 7-11s and having a slurpee at each one. My teeth hurt for a week afterwards.

Re: 7-11 Day

At my local 7-11 there was a slurpee drinking contest. First you had to get a bean bag into a hole. I completed that as did 9 other people. I dominated the competition drinking my 24 oz slurpee in 39 seconds with no brain-freezes. I won a gift backet of Simpsons stuff such as hat, shirt, candy, 7-11 coupons, talking pen, talking keychain, talking bottle opener, and more worth about $75 it said. Also they are going to put my picture on the slurpee machine with the people who were dressed up in the simpsons costumes. Great day.

I took my brother to get a free slurpee today, it was slightly bigger than a shot glass. I had to actually buy him one because of how small it was. I did see this 16 year old chick smoke a curb and a city truck becuase she was on a cell phone. all in all, it was worth it.
