Question about Man vs. Wild

Why would he bring Flint instead of a lighter or fire proof matches. Doesn't a flint just make sparks?

A flint pretty much always works the same. And it's more badass...

lighting a fire with a flint is kinda fun, you feel somewhere between using a match and rubbing sticks together.

also, it makes better TV. This show is much more about good TV than super-practical advice. "Normally this should only be attempted by incredibly experienced climbers; since I've got 20 years climbing experience, I'm gonna do it"... ok, so what would I do?

I'm sure that if he had a radio, waterproof matches, signaling mirror, gps, and hatchet he'd be much better off, but the idea is that he's got stuff on him that any hiker *should* have, and certainly something that I always carry with me when I'm in the woods (though I also have waterproof matches, lighter, & tinder)

I was watching this in my hotel room two nights ago and was thinking, "he killed this rabbit and cooked this delectable meal for himself...what about the cameraman? What the [censored] is he going to eat"? Then I thought about it, he probably has a snickers and a bottle of Dasani in his back pocket during the day and staying at the Radisson at night.

A flint stick is always a better option than a lighter or matches.

the recent Iceland episode did not look fun at all in those winds and rain. supposedly Bear sleeps inside a dead deer carcass to escape from freezing, ala Luke and Han Solo on the Planet Hoth, in one of the future episodes

lol

the first time I saw this show, he was crossing some river and he's like "THIS IS REALLY DANGEROUS, VERY SLIPPERY" and I say out loud to my friends, "yeah, its so slippery that the guy with the 10lbs camera isn't having a problem" and right after I say that the camera man fell. It was pretty funny.

the one where he put his jacket in the pack, and floated down teh river, to get to near the highway...I forget where exactly he was, it def looked like they put a life jacket on him under his sweatshirt which was lame-o.
