Winning Low Limit Hold\'em - Lee Jones starting hand question
 

I'm refering to the third edition, page 53.

"Summary Middle position
You're the first in
Raise: The higher range of hands you were going to play anyway
Fold: everything else - don't call"

I'm just a little unclear on exactly what he means. I think the phrase "higher range" is throwing me off. Does his advice mean that any hand you were going to play in early position whether it's a call or raise, should be a hand that you raise with from middle position if you are first in? Or does higher range refer to specific hands from that group? I think that he means that any playable early position hand should be a raising hand in middle position based on the fact that if you can play it in early position you can play it in middle or late position.

I'm just a little unsure and want to fully grasp the concept clearly. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Ah, yes. The meaning of this passage can, sometimes, be a tad unclear.

What the author is trying to say is that you must go at once to Barnes & Noble and buy a copy of Small Stakes Hold'em. After reading that, all the advice in Winning Low Limit Hold'em will be more clear.

i would add for OP,

lee jones:good book to not lose money(u will break even)
sshe : good book to make money(if u do a good job learning,u will at worst break even....)

u choose!

My two cents is that Winning Low Limit Hold'em is the better book for the beginner to read first. Then once the player really understands the material and has put it into action, he can move on to SSHE and start to destroy the game with a deeper sophistication.

Personally I prefer Weighing the Odds as a first limit hold'em book. But I'm often a 2+2 heretic.

actually first book to read INSTEAD of winning low limits..

internet texas hold'em by matthew hilger..

and by far its the better of the 2,and ITH is very easy to read for beginner.

if i had the info i had when i started..

ITH > SSHE > TOP for limit

little green book > HOH(1-3) > TOP > NLH T&P (if OP ever want play no limit tourn or no limit cash game....

ps: i just find lee jones a great guy(for little i seem from him,)but lets face it, ITH by hilger is easier and better for beginner (u wont be weak tight as WLL teach u 2 be i think...) and teaches u at the start the right way to play..
