Profanity filter

So, I was just wondering this after reading the avatar thread.

Why does the profanity filter really exist?

Is it really that bad for people to be allowed to write shi* or fu*k or other words like that?

I made a list of current posts the other day in the Nate banning thread. This is what I found from a 5-minute glance at a few forums:

--
Phil Ivey is a strip club degen
in this thread we name investments better than staking TJ
Famous poker player caught in bed w/ another poker players' wife?
Which poker players look like they do drugs?
Card Runners Tech support is a joke.
Sexual variance
WTF my farts smell so bad they are preventing me from sleeping
Threeway turns weird--hot or not?
Girls & PhotoBucket Accounts *** NSFW ***
Beat: Made out w/ fattie in public
Best Jerking off session of my life
How do I stop my girlfriend making sounds during sex?
ask me about being the happiest guy alive (i.e. I just rubbed one out)
is smoking a blunt or eating mcdonalds worse for you?
Friend pisses in my bed....

I find it weird that these topics are allowed to be carried on at 2+2, while standard profanities are filtered.

To me, much of the discussion on 2+2 is far, far, far more offensive and inappropriate than lots of the words that are censored.

Anyhow, I'm not really pushing for change or anything. I was just curious about the background of this decision and was wondering how other mods/admins felt about it.

Mat,

What if you, I, David, and Ray banded together to fight Mason?

One of us could steal his vitamins and hold them hostage, then we would have the upper hand.

Regarding the issue itself, I don't really care. I just think it's weird given the type of disgusting stuff discussed all the time on 2+2, that's all.

It is [censored] weird. The stuff that's allowed today never would have been allowed at first. Slowly we evolved into the gutter. I like it and Mason tolerates it. He doesn't endorse it, however. I'm pretty sure that he believes lifting the filter would imply such an endorsement.

Hi Masked Man:

I have used a personal profanity filter for well over 25 years. No one who currently knows me has ever heard me use a swear word of any sort (even though I get accused of it every now and then). So we're going to keep it.

Also, just between us, I strongly recommend that you and your cronies keep your hands off my vitamins.

Best wishes,
Mason

Mason, would you be more likely to let a curse word slip or openly detail the best jerking off session of your life?

I completely agree but any change should be limited to specific forums.

The strategy forums and many other special interest forums don't allow this type of garbage. For them the profanity filter isn't at all inconsistent with the content of the forum. The filter helps maintain decorum without turning the mods into nitty four-letter-word police.

Clearly, I read the wrong forums. I'm not going to go looking for the thread or anything, but apart from being someplace like your parents' house or a monastery, why would anyone want his lady not to make noise during sex?

Because she's having sex with somebody else?
