Judging a good 2-4 to 3-6 game

When I first started playing, my pre-flop and flop play were solid, but I had trouble adapting on the more expensive streets. I found myself using a "fit or form" strategy. Although I was not losing money, I could not (obviously) get myself over the hump of making more than one big bet an hour.

Then I purchased SSHE, and my game improved to the point where I doubled my win rate. As stated my many people on this board, the strength of the book is improving your post-flop play and inducing your opponents into making mistakes. I will be the first to admit that I could be a better player, but I am very happy with the 2-2.5BB/hr I have been making over the last two years in 800 hours of play.

That leads me to my point. One of the things that I have noticed in judging a good game is the ability to play two groups of hands consistently; Axs and 66-22. If the conditions do not allow you to play these hands from almost any position, then the game tends to be not as good. I make a lot of money on these hands in a more passive game, or in a game where the raise comes from a tighter, unimaginative player that I can see coming. The ability to get nut flush draws and sets is vital to incrasing your win rate, and the inability to play these hands as often as you need to affects said win rate.

I was wondering what other kind of items you use in judging a good game within a few hands.

Thanks for listening,

Nat

2-2.5 BB/100?? Sjees. That's a lot. Even 1 BB/100 is for me. What stakes are we talking about here? In the games I play I can virtually never play Axs, unless it's a blind steal. Small pocket pairs are still reasonably playable, unless in middle position. I think it's a good game if it's not folded round 3 times in a row...

Huh? This is why I think multi-tabling is essential to not die of boredom.

3/6 mainly, but 5/10 is the same; that is, if there's a game going. 2/4 is somewhat better, but I still almost never get to play Axs there.

Can't play Axs? I'm calling two cold all day long with that hand if I have to.. and I'm playing (and winning) live 3/6. Small pairs I'll limp and call one raise usually. In the long run I think these are two types of starting hands that you have to be willing to stick your neck out a little in order to rake in the chips.

Try cold calling Axs online at 3/6 stakes, and you'll be broke pretty quickly.

Is online that much more aggressive/loose preflop?

It is that much more aggressive/tight preflop. The funny thing is, you can almost play Axs in online games, because the games are so tight that the risk of domination is smaller. But that is a whole different topic.

Interesting.. I had always thought that online was even looser than live, due to the ease of clicking the mouse. Sounds like I'm playing the right game =]

If online was looser than the places I play live it would be like playing bingo.
