shin splints--anyone with cures, advice, knowledge?

so i hurt my shin muscle.

thought it was some sort of strain/muscle pull that i aquired while trying to do a large number of double unders with a jump rope (that and a bit of overtraining i am sure)

now i am convinced it is shin splints (which is sort of a catch all diagnosis on its own i realize)

hurting more than ever, really sore after running a 10k a few days ago, now hurting when i squat and move around, not cool. i know the rest, ice, ibuprofen route, but looking for anyone who has had luck in quick healing or any other methods. i will do massage/ultrasound/accupunture/ whatever

thanks in advance, your limping crossfitting friend. J.

The sides of my shins/calves/achilles hurt too. I'm never going to stop jumproping for 6 months again! I think ignoring the pain for the most part and just cutting out running is the way to go. What do you think?

First i would talk to a doctor or at least ask someone who is qualified to say that it's definitely shin splints. When I had it, it hurt a lot when I ran my fingers down either side of the tibia. Compression sleeves and ice are probably your best bet for a quick fix if you don't want to rest.

Runner's shin splints come from an imbalance between your calf muscles and your tibialis anterior. It's very similar to lots of other muscle imbalance syndromes (IT band syndrome). Stretch the hell out of your calves after working out/warming up is very important. Wall stretches are fine for that. Also building up your tibialis anterior is important. Sit with both feet hanging off one side of a bench or sit normally in a chair. Center a barbell with 10lb plates on each side on the distal part of your feet, right about at the base of your toes. Use your feet to "curl" the barbell just using your ankle's motion.

This may be a sidetrack if you have a specific injury: but aren't shin splints caused by worn out shoes most of the time?

Kneel on your knees and lean back with feet straight as possible. Works best after the run.
