external hard drives (for music mostly)

im running out of space and need to get an external hard drive. ive been looking at maxtor and iomega 320 gb models. like $100 from amazon and best buy and such.
Better place to buy from?

Im going to use it almost entirely for music, does this give any special considerations?

will dl'd music be difficult to send to the external hard drive, keep in my that im a dummy. and will i need to do anything special to get it to my windows media player library?

thanks for any help, general guidelines or specific suggestions.

Re: external hard drives (for music mostly)

Shouldn't be any problems at all. Just copy the music to folders on the new drive and point your media player at it.

Re: external hard drives (for music mostly)

There are two things you need to consider with external hard drives. Speed and connection type. Most drives will be 7200rpm. Opt for a 7200rpm drive over 5400rpm.

2nd is connection type. In order from best to worst is:

1) e-sata
2) firewire 800
3) firewire 400
4) usb 2.0
5) usb 1.1

Your computer definitely supports usb 2.0 if it was made in the last 5 years. You will have to check your documentation about e-sata or firewire.
